Dementia and the social work role

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of the session is to consider dementia in the context of the social work role. It will introduce the most common forms of the diagnosis as well as delve further into how it can affect the individual.  Dementia is understood from different perspectives and discussion around how it manifests in the lives of individuals will take place. Moreover, there will be analysis from a practical and theoretical stance around how to effectively engage with people living with dementia who are in need of social work services.

 

SPEAKERS BIO

 

This session will be delivered by Dr Carl Chandra and Aleister Griffin, Consultant Social Worker, Adults Social Care, London Borough of Hackney.

Dr Carl Chandra entered social work in 1993 and has worked in both children and adult’s services, before entering academia in 2007. His research interests include topics such as ‘the effectiveness of multi-disciplinary teams’ as well as ‘social work perspectives of the needs of people living with dementia’. Carl was a senior lecturer at Middlesex University and continues to teach and present across the social work profession.

Aleister Griffin has been a qualified social worker since 2013 when he completed his MSc in Social Work at Royal Holloway, University of London. Since then Aleister has worked at Hackney Council within various areas of adult social care. Aleister has worked within the Adult Safeguarding Team, Older People and Physical Disabilities, Intermediate Care and Rapid Response, Hospital Social Work, Learning Disabilities and Mental Health within the borough. Aleister is currently a Consultant Social Worker, a new role within adult social care that was created to try and link social care workforce development with front line practice.

 

Learning objectives:

1. To introduce the concept of dementia.
2. To consider the purpose of social work and how effective practice might be achieved.
3. To overview both theoretical and practical approaches which enable purposeful working.
